April 1813. The Allied forces continue their spring offensive and push the French deep into Germany. The fastest progress is made by one of the Russian-Austrian Corps, reaching almost the outskirts of Magdeburg.
Here, it is faced by a French Corps of comparable strength in order to defend the city and push the Allies away from this strategic city.

Scenariusz bitwy przewidywał rozstawienie wojsk Francji i Księstwa Warszawskiego w pewnych strefach na stole. Przypadła mi strefa na prawej flance. Było tam trochę terenu ograniczającego ruch tj. las i zabudowania. Dodatkowym problemem było oddalenie od sojuszniczych Dywizji, co mogło spowodować okrążenie i odcięcie od nich. Strona Francuska miała rozstawić się pierwsza, dopiero później rozstawiały się dywizje sprzymierzonych. Szósta Dywizja, czyli moja zajęła następujące pozycje: Artylerię Pierwszej Brygady rozstawiłem w ten sposób aby ciężka 12funtowa piesza artyleria (2 kompanie) ostrzeliwała pole na prawo od lasu. Towarzysząca jej piechota (5 batalionów lekkiej piechoty i 2 bataliony liniowej) miały za zadanie kontrolować drogę między bagnami i teren między lasem a drogą, aby nie dopuścić do wlania się tam kolumn przeciwnika. Kompania 6funtowa Drugiej Brygady kontrolowała drogę przechodzącą między wsią a lasem. Towarzyszące jej bataliony miały za zadanie pod osłoną budynków kontrolować póby obejścia wioski i kontratakować w razie zbyt głębokiego ataku nieprzyjaciela. Artyleria konna z Brygady Lekkiej Jazdy ustawiła się tak aby ostrzeliwać całe puste pole na lewo od zabudowań, gdyż spodziewałem się tam silnego zgrupowania jazdy nieprzyjaciela. I jak pokazało życie, nie pomyliłem się. Ósma Dywizja Rozstawiła się w środku naprzeciw największego wzgórza. Tutaj przez błąd dowódcy dywizji w rozstawieniu, jedna brygada piechoty przemieszała się z brygadą jazdy. Dodatkowo część została ustawiona w kolumnach a część w lini. W konsekwencji znacznie utrudniło to manewrowanie brygadą na początku gry. Siódma Dywizja Rozstawiła się po lewej stronie. Piechota zajęła miejsce bliżej centrum a Dragoni mieli pilnować flanki. Wojska Francuskie i Księstwa Warszawskiego mogły poruszyć się dopiero w następnej turze po wyjściu przeciwnika ze swojej strefy rozstawienia (12" od krawędzi stołu), ale można było strzelać. |
The battle scenario assumed the deployment of the French and Duchy of Warsaw troops in certain zones on the table. I was assigned a zone on the right flank. There was some terrain there that restricted movement, i.e. forest and buildings. An additional problem was the distance from the allied Divisions, which could result in encirclement and being cut off from them. The French side was to deploy first, and only then did the allied divisions deploy. The Sixth Division, i.e. mine, took the following positions: I deployed the artillery of the First Brigade in such a way that the heavy 12-pound infantry artillery (2 companies) would fire on the field to the right of the forest. The accompanying infantry (5 light infantry battalions and 2 line battalions) were tasked with controlling the road between the swamps and the area between the forest and the road, to prevent enemy columns from pouring in. The 6-pounder company of the Second Brigade controlled the road between the village and the forest. The accompanying battalions were tasked with controlling attempts to bypass the village under cover of the buildings and counterattacking if the enemy attacked too deeply. The horse artillery of the Light Cavalry Brigade positioned itself so as to shell the entire empty field to the left of the buildings, because I expected a strong grouping of enemy cavalry there. And as life showed, I was not mistaken. The Eighth Division deployed in the center opposite the largest hill. Here, due to the division commander's mistake in deployment, one infantry brigade mixed with the cavalry brigade. Additionally, some were positioned in columns and others in lines. As a result, it significantly hindered the brigade's maneuvering at the beginning of the game. The Seventh Division deployed on the left. The infantry took their place closer to the center and the Dragoons were to guard the flank. The French and Duchy of Warsaw troops could only move in the next turn after the opponent left their deployment zone (12" from the edge of the table), but they could shoot. |

Pierwsze ruchy nieprzyjaciela zostały zauważone w mojej strefie, to Dywizja Austriacka zaczęła pojawiać się po dwóch stronach lasu. I w mojej turze została wzięta na cel przez ciężką artylerię. Celny ogień spowodował pierwsze straty i dezorganizacje w szeregach Austriaków. Musiało się to odbić na morale gdyż w kolejnej turze brygada nie zdała rozkazów i nie mogła się poruszyć. Za to w mojej strefie pojawiła się Pierwsza Rosyjska Dywizja z Gwardią i Silną Jazdą. Na przeciw siebie miałem już 4 Pułki Ciężkiej Jazdy i 1 Pułk Lekkiej Jazdy (wszystkie large) plus Kozaków, 4 baterie artylerii, 5 batalionów Rosyjskiej Gwardii, 7 Batalionów Austriackich i 5 batalionów Rosyjskich - te ostatnie na szczęście skierowały się na naszą Ósmą Dywizję. |
The first movements of the enemy were noticed in my zone, the Austrian Division began to appear on both sides of the forest. And in my turn it was taken as a target by heavy artillery. Accurate fire caused the first losses and disorganization in the ranks of the Austrians. This must have had an impact on morale because in the next turn the brigade failed to pass orders and could not move. On the other hand, the First Russian Division with the Guards and Strong Cavalry appeared in my zone. I already had 4 Heavy Cavalry Regiments and 1 Light Cavalry Regiment (all large) plus Cossacks, 4 artillery batteries, 5 battalions of the Russian Guard, 7 Austrian Battalions and 5 Russian battalions - the last ones fortunately they headed for our Eight Division. |

W kolejnej turze pojawiły się kolejne Dywizje Rosyjskie. Dywizje 7 i 8 mogły rozpocząć swoje ruchy. Jednak żołnierze 8 dywizji woleli stać na swoich pozycjach. Najciekawiej było na moim odcinku, gdzie przez 3 tury doszło do kilku szarż kawaleryjskich. Przez 2 tury celnie ostrzeliwani przez moją artylerię konną Austriaccy Kirasjerzy zaliczali dezorganizację. W trzeciej turze pomimo pokrzykiwań swojego dowódcy nie ruszyli do szarży na moich lasnjerów. Chyba w 5 turze doszło do starcia i minimalnie wygrali je Austriacy, a mój kiepski rzut przy beak test spowodował, że lansjerzy uciekli. Natomiast z Dragonami i Ułanami Rosyjskimi moi Lansjerzy i Polscy Ułani mierzyli się aż 3 razy. Walki były zaciekłe i spowodowały dużo obrażeń. Raz udało mi się zaatakować Rosyjskich Dragonów od frontu i flanki i zdecydowanie wygrać, jednak wspaniały rzut na morale uratował Dragonów i tylko się wycofali - jedno oczko mniej i skończyliby jak moi Lansjerzy. Dopiero po bitwie przypomniałem sobie, że cała moja brygada kawalerii miała weteranów i powinna walczyć z jedną jedną kością. Tak zakońćzyły się szarże kawaleryjskie między naszymi brygadami. Mało brakowało aby się one złamały. Do końca gry na tym odcinku pracowała tylko artyleria. |
In the next round, more Russian Divisions appeared. Divisions 7 and 8 could begin their movements. However, the soldiers of the 8th Division preferred to stand in their positions. The most interesting thing was in my section, where there were several cavalry charges over 3 turns. For 2 turns, the Austrian Cuirassiers, accurately fired upon by my horse artillery, were disorganized. In the third round, despite the shouting of their commander, they did not charge my Lancers. I think in the 5th round, there was a clash and the Austrians narrowly won it, and my poor throw during the beak test caused the Lancers to flee. However, my Lancers and Polish Lancers faced the Russian Dragoons and Uhlans as many as 3 times. The fighting was fierce and caused a lot of injuries. Once I managed to attack the Russian Dragoons from the front and flank and win decisively, but a great morale roll saved the Dragoons and they only retreated - one point less and they would have ended up like my Lancers. It was only after the battle that I remembered that my entire cavalry brigade had veterans and should have fought with one single die. This is how the cavalry charges between our brigades ended. They almost broke. Until the end of the game, only the artillery worked in this area. |

Gdy w centrum i na lewej flance wojska ruszały się dość niemrawo - prócz szarży Dragonów Francuskich skontrowanych przez Kirasjerów Rosyjskich, w pasie mojej dywizji działo się sporo. Z Dywizji Austriackiej tylko III Brygada próbowała przeć naprzód. Jednak celny ogieńartylerii i lekkiej piechoty spowodował, że nie ruszyła się zbyt daleko poza linię lasu. II Brygada próbowała raz z lewej, raz z prawej obejść las, ale wyraźnie było widać, że Austriacy nie mieli ochoty do walki. Pierwszy raz zobaczyłem ich w 7 turze, po złamaniu III Brygady. Część I Brygady nie bez problemów obeszła las i rozwinęła się w linię próbując nawiązać walkę ogniową z moimi batalionami. Około 3 tury ruszyła Rosyjska Gwardia: Najpierw Strzelcy zajęli wioskę a 3 bataliony powoli ją obchodziły. |
While in the center and on the left flank the troops were moving rather sluggishly - apart from the charge of the French Dragoons countered by the Russian Cuirassiers, there was a lot going on in the belt of my division. From the Austrian Division only the III Brigade tried to push forward. However, accurate artillery and light infantry fire caused it not to move too far beyond the forest line. The II Brigade tried to bypass the forest once from the left, once from the right, but it was clearly visible that the Austrians were not in the mood to fight. I saw them for the first time in the 7th turn, after the III Brigade had been broken. Part of the I Brigade bypassed the forest with some problems and spread out into a line trying to engage in firefights with my battalions. Around the 3rd turn the Russian Guard moved: First the Riflemen took the village and 3 battalions slowly bypassed it. |

W 5 turze III Brygada Austriacka desperacko próbowała jak najszybciej zmierzyć się z moimi jednostkami w walce na bagnety, ale kiedy już było ku temu blisko, dostała się pod celny ogień mojej lekkiej piechoty. W kolejnej turze ostrzeliwana z dwóch stron przez 3 bataliony piechoty i 2 kompanie artylerii została złamana. Do szarży na bagnety ruszyła tymczasem Gwardia Rosyjska mimo dostania się pod flankowy ogień piechoty i artylerii oba bataliony wykonały rozkazy i doszło do walki na bagnety. NiesamowitY był to widok, gwardia wyglądała jakby była na to nieczuła na wszystko co do niej strzelało. Jeden z batalionów wygrał swoje starcie, drugi przegrał. W trakcie moich ruchów artyleria znów rozpoczęła ogień flankowy, jeden z batalionów został złamany i uciekł z pola walki. Drugi wytrzymał, ale miał maksymalną liczbę ran. Widząc to dowódca Rosyjski rozkazał wycofanie pozostałych batalionów. Klęska Gwardii była blisko, a na taką wizerunkową klęskę nie można było sobie pozwolić. |
In the 5th turn, the 3rd Austrian Brigade desperately tried to engage my units in a bayonet fight as soon as possible, but when it was close, it came under the accurate fire of my light infantry. In the next turn, fired upon from both sides by 3 infantry battalions and 2 artillery companies, it was broken. In the meantime, the Russian Guard started charging at bayonets, despite coming under flanking fire from infantry and artillery, both battalions carried out orders and a bayonet fight ensued. It was an incredible sight, the guards looked as if they were insensitive to everything that was shooting at them. One of the battalions won its fight, the other lost. During my movements, the artillery started flanking fire again, one of the battalions was broken and fled the battlefield. The other held out, but had the maximum number of wounds. Seeing this, the Russian commander ordered the withdrawal of the remaining battalions. The defeat of the Guard was close, and such an image defeat could not be afforded. |

Nie długo cieszyłem się ze złamania jednej z brygad Austriackich. Pozostałe ruszyły mocno do przodu. Wystarczył atak jednego z czterech pozostałych w bitwie batalionów i moja brygada broniąca drogi została złamana. I did not rejoice for long that one of the Austrian brigades had been broken. The others had moved forward strongly. An attack by one of the four battalions remaining in the battle was enough and my brigade defending the road was broken. On the other flank, the Russian cuirassiers broke the dragoon brigade, which was also guarding the roads. The Allied victory was a matter of time, because there was no longer any strength to stop the deep encirclement of the Cossacks. We agreed that victory belonged to the Allied forces. |
